Restoration, Rehabilitation and Revegetation

Our experience is based on more than 20 years of first hand experience in planning and implementing restoration projects on a wide range of scales. This includes some very large scale ecosystem restoration projects, such as a 50,000 ha project for the Department of Conservation in Te Urewera National Park and landscape-scale planning for kiwi management in Northland. The company can provide an integrated package for restoration projects, including planning through to implementation.

Wildland Consultants have also planned and implemented many indigenous revegetation projects, in a range of environments. Since 1998 we have planned and undertaken c.90 seperate planting projects, some of which involve multiple sites and a range of habitat types. These projects have involved the succesful establishment of hundreds of thousands of indigenous plants and at least 100 species, including trees, shrubs, grasses, sedges, and rushes suited to forest, shrubland, and wetland habitats. All of our projects involve ongoing monitoring and we continue to monitor plantings until they are well established and maintenance requirements cease or become minimal. Our company implements every stage of these projects, including preparation of restoration/revegetation plans, site preparation, pest control, weed control, planting, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance. Company clients include private landowners, regional councils, district councils, iwi, and corporates. The projects have been undertaken to achieve protection and enhancement of indigenous biodiversity, and protection of riparian margins. We also manage indigenous revegetation through natural successional processes. One of these is a 200 ha site recently cleared as a result of the harvesting of Pinus radiata.

Wildland Consultants manages a sizeable restoration/revegetation project for Norske Skog Tasman Ltd. This includes restoration planning, contract management, supervision of site works (including substrate restoration), planting, and ongoing maintenance of plantings.

A restoration plan has been prepared for the Otauira Wetland at Hannah's Bay in Rotorua for the Rotorua District Council.
