Many surveys have been undertaken of freshwater and estuarine wetlands, including region-wide inventories (e.g. Otago Region) and assessments of conservation value and management requirements (including water level management, weeds, and monitoring).

Staff have particular skills in the identification of wetland species and habitat/vegetation types. Collaborative projects have been undertaken with NIWA, including monitoring of wetland turf vegetation a national review of the management of the margins of lakes and wetlands and a review of riparian buffer width management.
