Fauna Survey

Fauna survey, documentation and distribution mapping is a service provided in many different locations, including rare and secretive species. This has been carried out for various clients, including the Department of Conservation, local government, and corporate businesses. Some examples of projects are provided below.

Blue duck Whio or blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) in the upper Tauranga River, Te Urewera National Park
  • Kokako Survey (2000):
A survey of kokako on the Mamaku Plateau for the Department of Conservation.
    • Avifauna Surveys
Avifauna surveys have been undertaken for forest and wetland habitats, including estuarine saltmarsh, and targeted many surveys for kiwi and marsh bird species. Kiwi surveys have been undertaken widely in the North Island.
    Small scaled skink Small-scaled skink
    (Oligosoma microlepis)
    • Fisheries Surveys
Fisheries assessments have been undertaken widely, including electric fishing, trapping, and spotlight surveys.
Koaro Koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis), upper Hautapu River
    • Bat Surveys:
A survey of long-tailed and short-tailed bats was undertaken in the Tararua Ranges for the Department of Conservation. Automatic bat recorders were used at 10 survey sites. Surveys have also been undertaken in many other locations.
    • Other Services:
Staff are very experienced in undertaking surveys for species such as kiwi — based on kiwi calls, or using a trained kiwi dog. We also have considerable experience with lizards and indigenous frogs.
