Rotorua Botanical SocietyROTORUA BOTANICAL SOCIETY 2010 TRIP PROGRAMME**Please note: We would like intending participants to give the leader a call during the week before the trip. This will give the leader an idea of the party, and enable them to give you any last minute information. If the leader is not available contact Paul Cashmore 07 348-4421 (hm) or 07 349-7432 (wk). The meeting place for all trips, unless otherwise stated, is the carpark between the Convention Centre and the Police Station, Fenton Street, Rotorua (hereinafter called "the carpark"). We will carpool with a donation for petrol expenses for cars/boats to drivers please Reminder to trip leaders Please remember to collect the first aid kit from the Herbarium or supply your own. You are also responsible for delegating the writing up of the trip report or writing it yourself and getting it to the editor within 4 weeks of the trip. Friday 29 Jan - Tues 2 February 2010 - Auckland Botanical Society Anniversary Weekend Camp at TurangiLeader: Mike Wilcox (ABS) mike.wilcox@xtra.co.nz. or ph (09) 622 0323 Please book *ASAP with Mike (RBS members are welcome to attend). Accommodation: Turangi Cabins and Holiday Park, Ohuanga Rd, Turangi (ph 07 386 8754). Grade: Medium -Hard. Transport: BOP members will need to make their own way to venue. Arrival and departure times: Arrive by 1.00pm on Friday 29. We have cabins booked until 10am on Tuesday 2 February Bring: Bedding (sleeping bag or sheets/blankets), towels, torch, knife, fork & spoon, plate, mug, parka, warm jersey, day pack, water bottle or thermos, sneakers. Also bring cakes or cookies for suppers and a couple of bottles of wine. Meals: All to be provided by Turangi Cabins. Programme: The programme will feature the native flora around the southern end of Lake Taupo, including Tongariro National Park and Kaimanawa Forest Park. Friday 29 Jan: Tongariro River by raft*, starting at 2 pm from Turangi Cabins. 4 hours - total trip time. We will be supplied with wetsuits, polar fleece jerseys, wetsuit boots, splash jackets, life jackets, helmets. You need: swim wear, towel, and a sense of adventure. Saturday 30 Jan: Mt Pihanga or Mt Tihia/Lake Rotopounamu, Tongariro National Park Sunday 31 Jan: Umukarikari Track, Kaimanawa Forest Park Monday 1 Feb: Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary/Desert Rd or Whenuakura Clearing Tuesday 2 Feb: Kuratau River, then returning home via Taumarunui. Cost: About $140 each for accommodation and meals. Pay Mike during the Camp. *Please confirm by 10 Dec 2009 that you are taking part in the exciting botanising by raft trip from the Pouto Intake to the Blue Pool on the Tongariro River, 2-6 pm on Friday 29th. Cost is $109 per person, including transport to start and from finish. We will be stopping off in two or three places on the way down for botanising. There is a 5km walking option available (Tongariro River Walkway, Red Hut carpark to Major Jones footbridge or the shorter Tongariro River Loop Walking Track) in case you don't want to join the raft trip. Saturday 6 -Sunday 7 February - Lake Surprise, Tongariro NPLeader: Chris Bycroft 07 346 3647 chris@wildlands.co.nz Meet: Sat morning Rotorua or Ohakune (contact the trip leader by the previous Wednesday as we will car pool as much as possible - and alpine trips require some organisation). Grade: Medium or Hard options Accom: DOC Mangaturuturu Hut 15/$5 (adult/youth) Hut tickets required. Bring: Full tramping gear and food for an overnight stay in an alpine hut. Lake Surprise is a beautiful alpine lake approx 1 hour walk north from Maungaturuturu Hut on the Round the Mountain walk on Mt Ruapehu. The area contains a diverse array of alpine flora including wetlands which will make interesting botanising. On Saturday morning we will drive up Ohakune Mountain Rd (Turoa) and walk into Mangaturuturu Hut (approx 1.5 hrs). We will walk to Lake Surprise and spend time botanising around the lake before returning to the Hut for the night. On Sunday we will return to the roadend botanisng further on way out and environs in the vicinity of the hut and Ohakune Mountain Road. For those wanting a harder option there is the opportunity to tramp from Mangaturuturu Hut north around the mountain to Whakapapa Village (approx 7-9 hrs) to be picked up by the remainder of the party on the way home. Friday 26 or Saturday 27 - Sunday 28th February - Scenic Reserves of the Motu Rd - Matawai to OpotikiLeaders: Paul Cashmore 07 348 4421 (hm), 07 349 7432 (wk) pcashmore@doc.govt.nz/John Hobbs 07 348 6620 jffhobbs@paradise.net.nz Meet: To be arranged (contact the trip leader by the previous Monday as we will car pool as much as possible). NOTE: Motu Road is mostly a narrow windy gravel road with some minor ford crossings on side roads. It is preferable to bring 4WD or 2WD with good ground clearance. Grade: Medium Accom: Tents for car camping (DoC basic campground and freedom camping - no showers, limited toilet facilities) - cost free Bring: Food, cooking gear and camping equipment for 1or 2 nights of car camping beside streams at roadends. Those travelling long distances are advised to come down on Friday making their way to Motu township via SH2 through Waioeka Gorge. For those arriving Friday morning there will be a visit to Motu Scenic Reserve to botanise this stunning kahikatea dominated wetland forest in the afternoon. Friday night will be spent freedom camping beside Motu River near Waitangirua near end of Motu Falls Rd. On Saturday we can meet at entrance to Whinray Scenic Reserve on Motu Falls Rd at 9:00am for those arriving in morning and move up the road to walk and botanise the old military track running through reserve. Later in the afternoon we will drive north along Motu Rd through Whitikau and Toatoa stopping to take in local botanical highlights along way. We will turn off at Toatoa on Takaputahi Rd and drive to the informal DoC Whitikau campground at the old Otipi hydro road junction (NZTM2000, E2002438-N5771214). We will stay here the night. On Sunday morning we will walk a short distance along the old Otipi hydro road giving us a feel for vegetation of the Raukumara Forest Park before returning to the cars later in the morning. For the remainder of the day we will continue north along the Motu Road stopping to look at any botanical highlights along the way before returning to Opotiki late afternoon. Wednesday 3 March Rotorua Botanical Society Lecture - Lisa Forester - The botany of Northland dune lakesLisa was the DOC conservancy botanist in Northland for many years, until recently when she shifted to Northland Regional Council. She will give a talk on the plant communities and rare plants in and around some of the special Northland dune lakes. Some of these lakes are in near pristine condition and support the deepest underwater vegetation in the North Island. Venue and time: The Eric Bridgeman Room, RAVE (Rotorua Arts Village), corner of Hinemaru & Hinemoa Streets, Rotorua (next to Tamaki tours/Millenium Hotel). 7:30pm. Sunday 14 March - Endean Bush Reserve, Paradise Valley, RotoruaLeader: John Hobbs 07 348 6620 jffhobbs@paradise.net.nz Meet: The carpark at 08:30 am Grade: Medium This block of conservation land covers the eastern scarp of the Mamaku Plateau along Paradise Valley north of Endean Road and is comprised of mainly rimu/tawa dominated forest. I have visited the site several times in order to find what vascular plant species are there and the evidence shows that in all probability it had not been botanised in detail before. Some species not previously found in the Rotorua Ecological District were collected and vouchered. Come along and find out what the new discoveries were, and maybe find some more. Sunday 11 April - Marawaiwai Scenic Reserve, OpotikiLeader: Paul Cashmore 07 348 4421 (hm), 07 349 7432 (wk) pcashmore@doc.govt.nz Meet: The carpark at 8:00 am or Opotiki DOC office at 9:45am Grade: Medium A visit to this 70 ha DOC reserve very close to Opotiki (Harrison Rd). The reserve contains a diverse variety of vegetation types including forest dominated by puriri, kahikatea, hard beech and tawa. There is also an area of manuka scrub and raupo wetland to botanise. We will search for swamp maire, Schizaea dichotoma and Bulbophyllum tuberculatum, all previously recorded in the reserve. Saturday 17 April - Okareka Mistletoe Restoration Project Weed Control Work DayLeader: Paul Cashmore 07 348 4421 (hm), 07 349 7432 (wk) pcashmore@doc.govt.nz Meet: Cnr Summit and Loop Rds @ 8:45 AM Grade: Medium-Hard - Activities suitable for all ages and abilities will be provided. This may include releasing our September plantings and weed control elsewhere in the reserve. Saturday 1 May -Athenree Bowenton DunesLeader: Sarah Beadel ph 07 345 5912 sarah@wildlands.co.nz Meet: The carpark at 8 a.m. or Bethlehem at 9 a.m. Grade: Easy Explore the dunes - a wide range of species are present, including spinach (Tetragonia implexicoma), spinifex, Lachnagrostis billardierei, pingao, Oxalis rubens, and Zoysia pauciflora; visit the pohutukawa forest (species present include Lepidosperma laterale, Pteris comans, P. macilenta, Tetragonia tetragonioides) on the heads; and also possibly some saltmarsh. Saturday 29 May -Thornton Dunes, Rangitaiki PlainsLeader: Jo Bonner Ph 07 308 0411 / Sarah Beadel ph 07 345 5912 sarah@wildlands.co.nz Meet: The carpark at 8 am or Rangitaiki River Mouth (western side) at 9 am. Grade: Easy A winter's day expedition. Explore the dunes near the mouth of the Rangitaiki River and see Melicytus novae-zelandiae, Carex testacea, and Thornton Kanuka. Then after lunch visit the Whakatane Branch of Naturally Native, one of the largest coastal plant producing nurseries in NZ, where amongst the spinifex and pingao we will look at the more unusual or locally rare and endangered plants such as Olearia pachyphylla, Pomaderris kumerahou, Elaeocarpus hookerianus and Pimelia species. Also an opportunity to taste some native edibles, Rorripa divaricata, Apium prostratum, and Sonchus kirkii Sunday 13 June - Carmichael Reserve-Bethlehem Valley, TaurangaLeader: Graeme Jane ph 07 570-3123 gtjane@clear.net.nz Meet: The carpark at 8:30 am or 9:45 am at junction/overbridge of Expressway and Waihi Road, Otumoetai. Grade: Easy Three km of reserve in development over the last 8 years with a gradation in wetlands from salt marsh to freshwater ponds and extensive revegetation of former paddocks. The area includes salt turfs and saline aquatics. Small corners of remnant vegetation add spice. Further upstream area of willow has been converted to forest. Monday 21 June - Annual General MeetingVenue: DOC BOP Conservancy Office, 99 Sala St, Rotorua, go in Scion (Forest Research) north entrance and turn left before the locked gates. Time: 7:30 pm Wine, juice, cheese and nibbles will be provided. Following the AGM members will show images of recent expeditions so bring photos of recent expeditions on memory stick or CD. 10 images or 10 minutes please. Sunday 11 July - Mangapouri Scenic Reserve, Tauranga Direct Rd, KaharoaLeader: John Hobbs 07 348 6620 jffhobbs@paradise.net.nz Meet: The carpark at 08.30 am or at the vacant area 300 m on the Rotorua side of Roy Road on the Tauranga Direct Road at 9.00 am. Grade: Medium We will have a look in that part of the reserve to the eastern side of the road which is largely rimu/tawa forest steering clear of the blackberry, heading eastwards as the lie of the land permits and may be going down towards the Mangapouri Stream along the southern boundary on the way out. This reserve has probably not been botanised since 1984 so there may be some new species to be found. Sunday 8 August - Pataua Island/Oscar Reeve Scenic Reserve, OhiwaLeader: Paul Cashmore 07 348 4421 (hm), 07 349 7432 (wk) pcashmore@doc.govt.nz Meet: Carpark at 8.00 am or corner of Ruatuna Rd and SH2 at Ohiwa at 9.45 am. Grade: Medium Bring: Gumboots - will need to cross mudflats at low tide! In the morning we will visit 22 ha Pataua Island Scientific Reserve in Ohiwa Harbour which can be reached easily at low tide across mudflats. Pataua Island contains a sequence from estuarine wetlands and saltmarsh through to regenerating indigenous forest and scrub dominated by kanuka and rewarewa. In the afternoon we will visit nearby Oscar Reeve Scenic Reserve on Ohiwa Harbour Rd. This is a small 6 ha DOC Reserve comprised mainly of coastal pohutukawa -puriri-rewarewa-tawa dominated forest. Of note is a small stand of black beech along with an area of hard beech and a wetland gully dominated by Carex-raupo reed sedgeland. Thursday in August (date to be confirmed) Rotorua Botanical Society Lecture - Dr. Tim Martin - Flora, vegetation and history of Kaikoura Island, off Great Barrier IslandTim works as a consultant ecologist in Auckland and Northland. He will give a talk on the flora, vegetation and history of Kaikoura Island. Kaikoura or Selwyn Island (564 hectares) is located off the west coast of Great Barrier Island, at the entrance to Port Fitzroy Harbour. It is currently the subject of a major ecological restoration intiative. Venue and time: Rotorua Women's Club on Hinemaru St., near Princes Gate Hotel. 7.30 pm Sunday 12 September - Rata trip to Whirinaki Leader: Gareth Boyt 07 366 5194 (hm) 07 366 1086 (wk) gboyt@doc.govt.nz /Paul Cashmore 07 348 4421 (hm), 07 349 7432 (wk) pcashmore@doc.govt.nz Meet: The carpark at 8 am or at Murupara DoC office, SH 38, 9 am Grade: Medium This trip will take in sections of the Whirinaki track near Minginui, the new Moerangi mountain bike/walking track and return via an old 4WD track and the Mangamate stream (including a couple of easy crossings) to the Whirinaki track. We'll pass through dense podocarp forest on the lower Whirinaki River terraces, as well as mixed podocarp-hardwood forest with some great examples of northern rata along the 4WD track section of the Moerangi track. There will be good opportunities to see and hear numerous birds including kaka, kakariki and whio. There will also be a chance to view the critically endangered liverwort Schistochila pellucida in the Te Whaiti nui a Toi canyon. On Saturday we will go up Maungaroa Station Access Rd behind Te Kaha, which traverses coastal forest grading to mixed podocarp-hardwood forest higher up. On Sunday we may visit the nearby DOC Whanarua Bay reserve which has is a good example of coastal forest vegetation. Plus probably a few other gems slipped in somewhere! We have been offered Tim's bach on a QEII covenant at Whanarua for the Saturday night, for the first 6 takers only but plenty of room for camping. Saturday 6 November - Whakaipo Bay, TaupoLeader: Grant Milligan 07 349 4928 or 021 0279 2706 gr.milligan@xtra.co.nz Meet: The carpark at 8:30 am or intersection of SH1 and Norman Smith St, Taupo 9:30 am Grade: Easy-Medium A walk around part of Lake Taupo through regenerating forest and shrubland. It's an easy walk on level ground - ideal for families. There are several picnic spots along the way. .At the end of the track there are views over the lake to Karangahape cliffs and the Tongariro National Park volcanoes. Walk a further five minutes to view Tahunatara Point. Return via the same route. Saturday 4th December - Dave McNeil's QEII Covenant, Mt Te Aroha (Combined with Waikato Botanical Society)Leader: Kerry Jones 07 858 1055 (work), 07 855 9700 (home), 027 747 0733 (cellphone) kmjones@doc.govt.nz Meet : The carpark at 8 am or the Te Aroha Town Clock at 9:30 am Grade: Medium Dave McNeil owns a property just north of Tui mine on Mt Te Aroha. About 150 hectares of bush is under QEII covenant which runs right up to the top of the ridge and adjoins Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park. He would like us to have a look around and do a species list. The area is mostly regenerating scrub and forest but there is an area of mature forest at the northern end. There is little botanical information available for this block so should make for an interesting exploration.
